Armchair Restoration

Chair with original cover
Detail of nailing along side of seat

An armchair needed to be recovered as well as requiring frame repairs. Additionally, the sagging webbing needed to be replaced.

The existing cover was held on with decorative nails around the base and back. Only those around the front legs will be replaced.

The decorative nails at the back were removed, freeing the cloth and allowing the broken back frame to be repaired.

The inner back and seat covers were removed. Curiously the seat had a second cover of two joined pieces of fabric.

Directly underneath these covers was a second layer of cover fabric – the seat piece having a join along the centre.

Both arms had broken joints. The arms were carefully removed, the joints cleaned and re-glued before replacing the arms and wooden caps.

Getting ready to remove the front lags

At the front, the wobbly front legs and frame piece were eased apart from the rest of the frame.

The joints were cleaned, glued and the section clamped while the glue set. A front leg wing was also fixed in place. The fabric and stuffings were replaced.

Seat and back covered in polyester wadding

With the seat upside down, the old, 4” wide, sagging webbing was removed.

New cotton webbing was added and the springs fixed to it.

With the chair upright again, FR polyester  wadding was added over the seat and inner back before the finishing fabric was added.

Decorative nailing was added across the tops of the legs with gimp pins behind the arms.

Fabric was pinned in place and then slip stitched to the back over polyester wadding. The lower edge was stapled under the frame.

An undercloth was added to complete the project.
